Sports Camp FYI
Balmy Beach Canoe Club Summer Sports Day Camp serves the Beach community and surrounding neighbourhoods as well visiting relatives and friends. No membership is required for any of our child or youth programs.
Each week different games and activities are planned to offer variety, as many campers book more than one week. The focus of the camp has always been self-esteem, fitness, co-operation and fun. Campers are always divided into small groups with their friends and are responsible to a counsellor. We paddle once each week at the Ashbridge Bay boathouse where the club keeps its equipment.
Staff and Coaches
Staff are local, attend university and many of them are former campers or CIT’s. They are extremely talented have many interests and are excellent role models. They use their creative talents and previous camp experiences to plan the program.
We hire 4-5 coaches from the paddling section who have Level 1 coaching qualifications and have completed a technical course in canoe and kayak to assist with our program. Many compete at the National level. They also have their Toronto Harbour Commission boat license and basic CPR and first aid certification. Safety is paramount in all our programs!
Theme Days and Other Activities
Each Friday will be either a Theme Day or a day trip. All trips are by chartered school bus. Families are welcome to join us there and take advantage of our group discount rate. We have a weekly theme and campers will be divided into groups. Some of last summer’s themes included; Video Games, Safari, Pirates and Hunger Games.
Balmy Beach Club (foot of Beech Ave.)
Campers bring their bicycles to camp, as this is our method of transportation, along the bike path, to places such as Ashbridge Bay, the Olympic Pool and other sites along the beach. It is important that campers are confident bike riders. It is also important to check that bikes are in good working condition. Remember, they must wear a helmet and will be carrying backpacks. Bicycles may be left overnight in our locked boathouse.
Safe Arrival Program
Many of the older children ride to camp on their own, so if they do not arrive by 9:00am, parents will be contacted. The camp line may be contacted 24 hours a day.
Although we do not require a deep-end swim test, campers must be able to confidently swim 2 lengths of a pool and tread water. A swim level equivalency of Red Cross 5 or Ultra 5 is acceptable.
For a nominal fee of $10 per day per child we offer extended hours. Extended hours are available from 8:15am - 5:30pm. Children arriving and/or departing camp outside of those hours, do so WITHOUT staff supervision, and neither camp nor club are responsible for their well-being outside of camp hours.
This payment is traditionally made in CASH (although we accept Cheque - Payable to Balmy Beach Canoe Club), and yes, you can pre-pay for the entire week up front, upon first day drop off.
Parents, in helping us (and you) to avoid additional late charges, please ensure arrangements have been put in place to have your child picked up on or before 5:30pm. Late pick-ups are subject to a $1 per minute charge. While we know that "life happens", kindly consider all your pick up options (such as going home with another family member or friend, walking/biking on their own, etc.) before camp starts.
